Leandra's inspiration for this bracelet:
Only in retrospect do I appreciate and realise what my 1950s childhood was really like. My parents worked so hard to provide us with all that we really needed, that it never occurred to us children that we were poor! I just remember my mum always being there to welcome us when we got home from school – usually with something delicious already in the oven for our tea. Mum teaching me to bake cakes and make pastry. Grandma teaching me to crochet. Dad teaching my brother to shoot rabbits for our Sunday lunch. Grandad teaching us both to fish in the local river – then we would cook and eat the fish. Adults seemed to have more time for children in the 1950s, and didn’t just plonk us down in front of the TV or a video game, as happens now. I remember foreign fruit like oranges and bananas being a big deal in the early Fifties – as they had to be imported by ship. A fruit bowl in the living room was quite a status symbol, and some people had wax fruit because of this. I recall my dad complaining saying “I’m going to stop buying fruit if you just keep eating it.” That made us all laugh, even then! This kitsch memories charm bracelet is a celebration of my 1950s childhood – I hope you love it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
